Check the ESC key (Common lock key) for a lock symbol on it. It could also be that the FN key is locked. To use the hotkeys (brightness, volume etc, Volume, Mute etc) press down the FN key on your keyboard then press the hotkey you want to use. The hotkeys share the same buttons as the function keys. My new Legion Y540-17IRH volume and mute keys (marked F1 F2 F3) are not working, dispite updating drivers and faffing about with sound and keyboard settings.
